‘Tis the season for drawing festive things, so here is a quick tip for drawing easy snowflakes in Procreate!

I’ve been working on a client project recently which involved drawing snowflakes and it took me a while to get my head around in procreate as I wanted 6 points and all the symmetry tools in procreate use either 4 or 8 lines of symmetry!

This is the method I came up with:

1. Turn on drawing guides using a quadrant option for the symmetry.

2. Making sure you have drawing assist turned on for the layer you’re working on, draw the first branch of your snowflake.

3. Duplicate your layer, tap the transform arrow and rotate by 60 degrees.

4. Duplicate the first layer again and repeat step 3 but this time rotate by 120 degrees.

5. Flatten those 3 layers.

6. Tap Transform and rotate by 30 degrees.

7. On a new layer, with drawing assist on, add a shorter branch to your snowflake.

8. Repeat steps 3-5

9. Flatten the whole snowflake and you’re done!

I try to avoid using duplicated layers for finished artwork in Procreate (because you lose image quality each time you duplicate) so when I draw snowflakes I make one like this to use as a tracing guide and then move it around redrawing a fresh one over the top each time for a finished piece. I like the hand drawn slightly imperfect look that I get when tracing like that, but you can use the symmetry tool as you trace if you want to to look pixel perfect!
