Watch me make a wavy psychedelic surface pattern design in Procreate! I didn’t plan this in advance and it took me a few minutes of dithering to figure out what I wanted to do! This week’s pattern took me about 16 mins from start to finish.

If you want to take a closer look at the video then turn the sound off and set the play speed to 0.5x to watch it at normal speed.

I probably wouldn’t use this way of making a pattern for a piece I was going to sell as I don’t like to duplicate/flatten/transform final art in Procreate, especially as many times as I did here! But for making a wallpaper or quick pattern for social media, it’s a fun way to play in Procreate!

You can download this pattern as a free lock screen for your iPad from the Freebie Library.

Wavy Psychedelic Pattern Time Lapse: Video

TOP TIP: A note on Interpolation methods in Procreate

Although I feel like Nearest Neighbour is often touted as the worst method for resampling in Procreate, it’s actually the best to use when you’re transforming a pattern tile. (It’s also the best for pixel art too!) As you can see in the video, Bicubic (often described as superior) creates a gap or seam at the edges when I resize the tile. Each method has it’s uses and it’s a case of figuring out which is best in each situation. If you do end up with a semi transparent seam, you can duplicate the layers to knock out the semi transparency and then you’re good to go!
